Dial-up download speed goals should be ?

I try for 45 - 60 kb for my home page and more if the pages are mostly
photography, which mine are. In those cases I uses thumbnails opening to the
larger images..... these could be as large as 90kb.

What is a good design goal for a home page to download on a typical 56k
dial-up connection?

I tested at http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ and it said
the current project I'm working on would take about 30 seconds at 33k.

What do you guys shoot for when designing a home page?

On my sites the index/home pages load in 15 to 20 seconds at that speed. All
other pages on my sites load within 30 seconds at that speed. I use thumb
nails that are large enough to see what the photo looks like, and then if
someone wants to see the photo, they can wait the time it takes to load. I am
one of the masses that is not going to hang around for a website to run all
kinds of junk before you can get to the content!!

The "ideal" home page opens in 15 seconds or less on a 56k modem.

I aim for 30 seconds max at 28.8 nominal (which is about what rural
dial-ups will get for a 56k modem).
