didn't know where else to turn

Sorry to be a bother but I didn't see a catagory that fit
my problem. I have XP Home on a 1.4 Ghz EMachines (ok so
I couldn't afford a real computer)....Each time I open
Word my monitor goes black and when the program reappears
the colors are washed out. If I click on display modes
on the desktop it shows the computer has switched to 256
colors..If I change it back to true color the screen goes
black again and then reappears correctly..I thought it
may be a RAM problem so I upped to 256..The Word I am
using came as part of Office suite 2002..Any ideas I am
stumped.
