didn't send e-mail, now I can't shut down word. What to do?

I was going to send a e-mail. I changed my mind. Now I can't shut down word.
The error message says " can't shut down word until e-mail is sent. Can't get
back to original message screen. I am not a internet genius. Can someone
please help me?
