Difference Between Fix and Repair

S

Sproul

I know that this is not really the place to ask this kind of question, but
don't really know where i'd find as many intelligent people to answer or
maybe argue the case for this question.

What is the difference between a Fix and a Repair?.

For instance if the battery in your watch died and you changed the battery,
did you fix it or did you repair it?

Personally i'd say fixed, as there was actual repair done.

Anyway ther has been about 10 of us arguing this out in the lab today and
still with no resolution, so i thought i'd see if anyone else may have an
input that my alter our thinking on the subject.

Al....

P.S. sorry if you read this and was looking for an answer to a technical
question.

Yes i agree, however with a dead battery it's not functional.

Ok here is another few of the questions that got us arguing.

1) the watch question previous.

2) My USB Stick is not accessable unless i format, so i format it, Did i fix
it or repair it?.

3) My Bicycle has a flat tyre, i glue a patch over the hole, is this a fix
or a repair.

4) A surface mount connector on a PCB has a few dry joints (loose
connections), so i reflow the solder on the connector, am i fixing it or
repairing it.

Thanks for your response Kathleen

It's all a matter of context.

However the watch was not broken, you didn't fix or repair the watch, you replaced the
battery.

Neither. You formatted it. it was broken, it just wasn't configured properly.
3) My Bicycle has a flat tyre, i glue a patch over the hole, is this a fix
or a repair.

You fixed the flat, but you did not repair the tire. To repair it would require vulvanizing,
elimintating the need for a patch.
4) A surface mount connector on a PCB has a few dry joints (loose
connections), so i reflow the solder on the connector, am i fixing it or
repairing it.

You are repairing it because you are restoring it to it's original intended condition.

Here's another example:
The water pump on your vehicle leaks.
The garage fixes your car by replacing the water pump.
But the water pump still needs to be repaired to restore it to it's original condition.

Fixes are "applied"
Repairs are "performed"

Replace the battery- neither fix nor repair.
2) My USB Stick is not accessable unless i format, so i format it,
Did i fix
it or repair it?.

Neither - the stick was "Prepared for use"
3) My Bicycle has a flat tyre, i glue a patch over the hole, is this

Either: Oxford Concise dictionary says fix = repair and repair =
fix
4) A surface mount connector on a PCB has a few dry joints (loose
connections), so i reflow the solder on the connector, am i fixing
it or
repairing it.

Either: see 3) above
