Difference in Mailbox Sizes

Joe

Hi,

Can someone explain to me, why in Exchange System Manager a mailbox shows
one particular size and when I look the properties of the mailbox in Outlook
and view the folder size on the server tab it is quite a bit smaller?

Thanks,
Joe

Do you have server-side rules defined?

Yes, I do...

Those take up bytes. Your rules are not in your folders. You get up to
38KB for rules (I don't this can be changed in Exchange). Is the size more
different than 38K? If so, by how much?

The size difference is quite large, in outlook it shows as 743Mb, in
exchange manager the mailbox is 1049Mb.

Has the mailbox been compacted by purging the delete-marked items? As I
recall, Exchange has its Recover feature to get back previously deleted
e-mails for whatever is the configured retention period. That means
those delete-marked messages must be available for that interval for the
users to use the Recover feature. The deleted messages aren't local to
the user but must be on the Exchange server. I don't the mechanics of
the feature but I suspect it would be easiest for organization to track
the delete-marked items by keeping them within the mailbox for which
they belong.
