differences between Republish Assignments & Publish New & Changed.

Can anyone summarize in a nutshell the differences between the following:
-Publish New and Changed Assignments
-Republish Assignments

The documentation doesn't make it very clear when to use one over the other.
By and large, they seem to perform the same functions..

?

Thanks,

I'm sure one of the MVPs can give you a more accurate and concise definition
of both functions but I will share how I use both. I use "Publish New and
Changed" when adding assignments, adding resources to assignments, etc.

I use REpublsh for times when I need to manually enter work on a task for a
resource that does not have access to PWA. I also use it if there is a
hiccup when tasks are updated in the project but do not update properly in
PWA, or if I need to adjust actuals. This "pushes" the changes out to the
resources' timesheets. If I am manually entering work, I also need to click
on the "Overwrite work entered by resource" to force the update.

I have also noticed that if you add tasks, you can change the task ID in the
project. But if you don't republish the tasks that have "moved", the
resources' timesheets will reflect the "old" Task ID, which causes a great
deal of confusion.

Hope that helps!

Christina,

This helps.. thank you for replying. Glad you pointed out the Task ID
change quirk - I hadn't noticed it yet.

Richard,
In addition to the differences Christina mentioned, Republishing assignments
is also required:
1. For a new or temporary PM to take over managment of a project.
2. To "push" a new method of time tracking if the administrator has changed
it.
3. To unhide tasks in a team members timesheet
4. To "push" new custom fields to the timesheet

Actual Work or Work?

Actual Work can be entered for a resource manually in most views, you just
need to include the actual work column. It is most accurate if you enter it
on the right hand timephased grid of the task usage view or resource usage
view.

However, you cannot enter Actual Work for a resource if you have Managed
Time Periods enabled on your environment. Only the resource can enter
actuals for themselves via PWA>Tasks.
