Different extentions, samephoto

While updating my web site from Publisher 2000 to 2003, I noticed that all
photos are saved in two extentions.. png AND gif. It assigns them the same
number but adds a 1 to the gif ( example 689.png and 6891.gif. )
Anyone know why ? And on some they are not of the same quality !
Do I transfer both to the web site or pick the best ? <G>
