difficulty with opening office documents

I have recently reinstalled Office97 into a new machine
running Windows XP Home. Now, when I open a file, a
message appears telling me the file is already in use,
and do I want to open a copy.

Can anybody tell me why this might be happening?

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
File Association needs to be recreated.

You can recreate them by re-registering the applications. Go to
Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
