digit grouping symbol

how do a comma , for 1000 or digit grouping symbol in a
word2000 table so when i type the number it automatically
formats it use the comma (digit grouping symbol) for
example i type 1000 it should come out as 1,000
i already my regional settings set correct in windows 98
control panel

I can't think of an easy way to do this in Word, but it is child's play in
Excel and a simple matter to format the table there and paste it into Word
c/w formatting.
