Digital certificates for Excel/Word

V

VanS

Hello,
I have an Excel/Word VBA app with macros and need to obtain digital
certificate to pass MS security muster. Am reading some MS KB articles on,
but does anyone have any "voice of experience" suggestions, guidelines or
caveats/warnings about obtaining? Also any suggestions on a reliable,
not-too-costly vendor for the certificate for a small biz with limited
resources at present.
Thanks, God bless
Van

I can't offer any warnings, but in terms of suggestions, don't go with
VeriSign. They charge you double what you'd pay at GlobalSign (I got my
certificate there) or Thawte. Note that the only benefit you get from
VeriSign is that you can qualify for the works with Vista logos (you
need a VeriSign cert to be able to apply). The other certs won't work.
If you don't care about that logo (I don't), then go with the cheaper
option.

Hi Patrick,
One other follow up question, re digital certificates: in distributing my

Hi Van,

It depends on the security settings on the client. Who is the target
audience of your app (internal, external)?
Which Office versions are you targeting?

I use www.CACert.org which is a free alternative to Verisign. You can
digitally sign your VBA project with a client certificate.

Hope this helps, Chris

The target market is a wide variety of external clients so would be a
variety of security settings. I am targeting Office 2000 and above (though
haven't tested for above Office 2003). So do I assume I would need the
digital certificates?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the tip. I was wondering if this certificate is universally
accepted? I will be distributing my app to a variety of external clients.
Also how hard is it to get verified? I just started looking at the site and
the variety of ways of getting verified.

Chris,
Also for example, I tried to go to a couple of links listed on the site-one
including the link to join-and my McAfee Site Advisor blocked both sites
saying the "security certificate presented by this website was not issued by
a trusted certificate." Again, I'm wondering how widely recognized are these
certificates and if there would be a problem using them for external clients.

It would have been a nice have for me, but it wasn't worth double the
price for a certificate.

Thanks, Patrick for your input. Question: what is the Vista logos you refer
to, and what is the advantage of it?
Thanks, God bless,
Van

:

I can't offer any warnings, but in terms of suggestions, don't go with
VeriSign. They charge you double what you'd pay at GlobalSign (I got my
certificate there) or Thawte. Note that the only benefit you get from
VeriSign is that you can qualify for the works with Vista logos (you
need a VeriSign cert to be able to apply). The other certs won't work.
If you don't care about that logo (I don't), then go with the cheaper
option.

Hello,
I have an Excel/Word VBA app with macros and need to obtain digital
certificate to pass MS security muster. Am reading some MS KB articles on,
but does anyone have any "voice of experience" suggestions, guidelines or
caveats/warnings about obtaining? Also any suggestions on a reliable,
not-too-costly vendor for the certificate for a small biz with limited
resources at present.
Thanks, God bless
Van

Chris,
Also for example, I tried to go to a couple of links listed on the site-one
including the link to join-and my McAfee Site Advisor blocked both sites
saying the "security certificate presented by this website was not issued by
a trusted certificate." Again, I'm wondering how widely recognized are these
certificates and if there would be a problem using them for external clients.

Windows is pre-populated with root certificates for Certification
Authorities like Verisign and Thawte. Client certificates issued by
these authorities are immediately accepted by browsers, Site Advisor,
Excel etc.. CACert is not one of the chosen few, so McAfee doesn't
trust it yet.

The user must add the root certificate for CACert to this list of
authorities (a simple process) and then client certificates issued by
CACert will also be accepted automatically. If the user doesn't want
to bother, then he can simply choose to trust all content signed by
VanS.

Hope this helps, Chris

I have created a client certificate from CACert, and added it to my
personal
certificates, but when I got to sign an excel vba project my newly
added
certificate does not show up in the list.

I would like to sign the excel sheet so that other people can use the
macro,
the file is stored on a network drive.

If anyone has any idea why this CACert is not working, or how to
attach it to
my excel project it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Colin.
