Direct to plate hassles

With Publisher 2000 ripping our files to a direct to plate
system was no problem. Now with 2003, Microsoft has almost
disabled this ability. We can usually get around it by
making pdfs with distiller (though why they want to put
printers through this is beyond me)but not always. Do I
just have to tell my Publisher 2003 customers that I can't
guarantee a rip? While I appreciate any help alot of tech
speak won't help. Is anyone successfully ripping 2003
files everytime? Cindy

What are the specific problems?

The issues I bump into are usually operator-induced.

While I don't go to plate, I do run film.
