Disable Auto Layout in PPT07?

In PowerPoint 2003, there was the feature/curse of auto layout. Insert a
picture into a blank slide, and that picture gets stuck in a template
placeholder. But PPT03 was kind enough to offer a button to disable the auto
layout. PPT07 is not so gracious.

So the problem is that if my main content frame is empty, and I insert a
picture from file, it is inserted in that content frame. And in PPT07, there
seems to be no way to remove it from the frame, or turn of this feature/curse.

I'm looking for an answer to two questions:
1. Can this auto layout be disabled or prevented in PPT07 like it could in
PPT03? I've already checked the autocorrect options, and the PPT03-like
option to disabled auto layout isn't there.
2. Can I remove the image from the auto layout after it has been inserted?

Thank you in advance.

Yeah, I just realized this was happening a couple of days ago. I'm not crazy
about it, either.

I couldn't find a way to turn it off, but you can click Reset Picture on the
Picture Toolbar to reset the picture to its real size. That doesn't bring
back the content placeholder, though.
