disabled macros. how to enable macros?

Hi, every time I open an office application I get this error message that I don't know how to remedy. For example in Word...

Firstly this message appears:
Microsoft Visual Basic
The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine how to enable macros.

I select OK and then it's followed by:
Microsoft Office Word
Some macros in this template will not run properly in this version of Word. Please contact your administrator or the macro vendor for an updated version of the template. Press F1 for more information or click OK to continue converting the template.

And that is followed by the first message once again. I have searched support and have come up empty thus far so if anybody can help me I would really appreciate it. I am still new to computers and would cherish some help from the experts.
