disappearing inbox

Very small network, less than five seats.
Hardware Firewall on Draytek router,
Trend PC-cillin virus checker.
Server Exchange on SBS 2003
Client Outlook 2003 on XP pro

Occasionally when the Laptop is connected to the network
& synchronised with the Desk top pc, both logged to the
same user, all mail in the Inbox of the desk top PC or
the Laptop 'disappears'. The mail can be recovered
using 'recover deleted', but this spontaneous & sporadic
behaviour is very disconcerting. Can any one shed light
on what is going on?
