Disappearing Ruler in Word 2010

I have noticed that on a few occasions, the ruler will disappear. I
know how to reinstate the ruler but am puzzled why it disappears in
the first place when I have the "Ruler" box already checked. I have
taken NO known action to ever remove it! What could cause it to
disappear? Thanks!

I just discovered something I had _never noticed before_ -- at the
right edge of the window, directly above the little up-"arrow" for
moving the text down a line, and below the tiny dash for opening a
split window, is a square button with an uninterpretable icon; if you
hover over it it says "Show'Hide Ruler," and if you accidentally hit
it when going for the up-arrow, it'll turn off your ruler!

Thanks Peter,

I too, never paid any attention to that little icon! As you suggested,
I may have inadvertently hit the icon when clicking on the UP arrow.
Obviously, it also serves a "shortcut" to "turn-on/turn-off" the
ruler! Learn something new every day!!!!!
