How do I prepare for a total loss? In other words, let's say I lose my hard
drive and have to reinstall clean and empty version of OneNote. Should I be
backing up certain directories to later restore after the reinstall? I'm
currently using the scheduled backup feature, but I have no idea where those
daily backups are stored, nor do I know how to restore them onto a clean and
empty install? Is the backup/restore feature the right way to protect myself
and is there a way to do a practice disaster that anyone could recommend?

To see where your backup notebook files are saved, click tools \ options \
save.

Depending on what you want to save, this folder set may be enough. Copy it
to an external drive on whatever basis you want and keep it safe.

Restoring them would be as simple as copying the folder set back to a new
drive and opening the notebooks from the new location.

I learned from experience here: I had three drives, one of which was my
backup drive, all go out at once:
