"disk full" messages when the disk is not full

As a math teacher I use Word Equation Editor a lot. I (and my collegues) get
"disk full" messages when we know the disk is not full. Then I cannot save my
document. Any ideas? I already thoght of not enough RAM but it seems to
happen on machines loaded with RAM or on small documents. Can't find a rhyeme
or reason.
