disk is full and document is not saved

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

The user is getting this error intermittently
when saving to disk.
The drive has 50gigs free and Disk utlitity /Cocktail was run again today.
User already saving as .xls not .xlsx

any help or workaround would be appreciated!
