disk is full

I use Word 2000 and have a lot of embedded figures and
equations with equations in figures as well. Often a
figure gets corrupted so that I can no longer save the
document, getting a disk is full error. When this happens
I have to do a binary search to find the effected figure.
Once found, the figure can't be opened but can be deleted
and pasted in from a an older version of the document. Any
changes to the figure between the two versions of the
document are of course lost.

Does anyone know of a way to avoid this problem or a
shorter way to recover from it?

All versions of Word suffer from this problem, but W2000 seems to
be the worst. We have an article about the problem and some
suggestions at <http://www.dessci.com/en/support/tsn/TSN64.htm>.
