I have been working on a PPT pres. which was created by an
outside vendor containing inserted pictures on a number of
slides, I believe these pictures were created in Photoshop
converted to jpg?. When I scroll these slides or try to
work on them they re-draw numerous times. This is not
consistent some re-draw more than others but this
definitely slows down editing.

Not sure if it's a memory problem? I have Dell GX260 P4
with 512 Ram, 32MB Radeon 7500.

Any comments would be appreciated.

regards,
Fred

Fred,

You're not alone with this problem. Try updating your "graphics card"
drivers to the latest version for your version of windows.

What other programs are you running - some are more resource intensive than
others. As example, even with a Radeon 9500/256MB and running MusicMatch (a
very resource intensive program...) I get redraw problems.

My experience is that the redraw problems center around slides that have
..png images with transparency or use PPT's transparency settings on multiple
objects.

Sounds like the pictures are too big. Is the file size unusually large? Many
people make the mistake of putting hi-res pictures in their presentation when
it's not necessary. Try compressing the pictures and resaving the file.

THX! for the quick response.

Troy, I have Outlook (always open) IE most of the time,
sometimes Photoshop & Excel. Usually I try to conserve
resources but sometimes I do leave them open. You did
mention PNG pictures with transparency, now I do create
these myself in Image Ready but have not had any problems,
I'm not sure how the outside vendor created this pictures?
they do contain transparent areas, they could be alpha
tif's, but I think you may have something re PNG's because
they are using multiple pictures on top of a picture.

What's kind of strange is this is an intermittment thing.
I have another workstation(Dell Laptop P4 2.43MHz, same
32MB video card but 768 MB System Ram)which does not have
this issue.

I may increase system ram on my desktop workstation maybe
this will help?

THX Mark for the quick reply.
Not sure of actual picture size or what file format, kind
of believe they are PNG's. I'll try using PPT's compress
picture feature to see if this helps.

TAJ,

THX for Quick response!
I have actually upgraded Video drivers from ATI about yr.
ago. Probably should check their site for updates.

At least I'm not crazy, evertime I try to show an IT Tech
it won't do it. Sure enough a few minutes later it's doing
it again. On my other workstation (more system RAM) it
does not have this problem.

I would also check the "contents" of the file in Properties. If the original
creators "Inserted an Object..." it may be of a file type that is very large.
If there are "Embedded OLE Servers" listed like Bitmap image or Photoshop
image this may make the files size very large. Do the following:

1. Find the offending image
2. "reset" the picture to arrive at it's native size (often much larger than
needed)
3. Right click on the image, and choose "Save as Picture".
4. If the image is very large, use an image editor (Photoshop, PSP or
similar) to resize it to proper size (A full ppt slide is 10"x7.5" @ 96dpi.
or 960x720 pixels)
5. If you want to be specific about the size, check the original pictures
dimensions in "Format Object, Size"
6. now re-insert it as a "picture from a file" and find the pic.

Now file size will be appropriate and screen redraw times will be
significantly lowered.

Also if a pic is grouped with something else you will need to Ungroup first.

Fred,
I have actually upgraded Video drivers from ATI about yr. ago.
Then they are most definately out of date. Some graphics cards get updates
about 1 per month.

Cheers
