Display the results not the formula in the task bar

How do I display the results of a function in the task bar. I have set up a
function from three adjacent columns the results are displayed in a fourth
column but I would like to remove the function whilst keeping the results in
column 4 how do I do this?

You can do this by selecting column 4, Edit>Copy, Edit>PasteSpecial>Values.
Note: this will permanently remove your formuals so that changes to the
first 3 columns will no longer be reflected in column 4. Be sure that
this is what you want before proceeding and save your work first as a
precaution.

Or, more simply, press F2 (edit), then press F9 (calc), then press Enter.

That would be more simple if the OP only wanted to edit one cell but I
don't see how it will work for an entire column.
