Displaying empty months

I'm sure this is a basic question, but I can't find the answer: when I make
pivot charts, I would like all months to appear even though there is no data
for some of them.

I've attempted creating "blank" entries for the months I'm missing, but
these show up in the pivots as having a total of 1 for that month.

Any suggestions or pointers to where I can find the information?
