The animations and transitions made a huge leap forward in PowerPoint 2002.
They have not changed much from 2002 to 2003. Animations can be set to
almost any time (0.1 seconds thru 3 days) . And while slide transitions are
still limited to fast/med/slow, they can be faked easily.
There is a smooth fade that fades directly from one slide to the next
(without going thru black), and this is not pixilated. The dissolve
transition is still available, but I don't have much use for it anymore.
It is worth the money to upgrade.
