do i need groove server 2007?

I'm really confused now. I have the Groove 2007 client software as
part of Office 2007, I was under the impression I needed to have
Groove Server 2007 installed to be able to use the client software
(unless I used Microsoft's $$$ hosted solution). I downloaded what I
*THOUGHT* was a timebombed copy of Groove Server from MS and installed
it, but it turned out to actually be the client, which I didn't need.
However I ran it and it appears not to need Groove Server connectivity
to run, can people on my LAN actually collaborate without the Server
piece?

I am so confused, nothing I'm reading makes clear if Server is
required for WAN sharing.
It's not even shown in this diagram here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/07/05/groove/default.aspx

I apparently don't need it for LAN, that's great news, but I have
employees
at a remote location that I'd like to share with as well. I'm trying
to figure
out how they can share across two firewalls.... without Server can I
get this to work? How about if I enable a VPN? Or is Server the
answer?
I'm just waiting for Server to be added to the Action Pack.

Basically, there are two deployment scenarios for Groove -

a). Standalone Groove client that can be bought seperately or as part of the
new Office 2007 Enterprise suite. These can work with the Microsoft/Groove
'public' infrastructure. (These are 'public' relay servers, etc).

b). If you chose to have your own infrastructure and management of the
Groove clients, then you would need the Groove Servers (which are in 3 parts
- relay, databridge & management). These run on 64-bit servers machines and
are $$.

The Groove client uses a P2P communications method to syncronize data with
your "Team". This will work without purchasing a dedicated server.

Groove Servers enable Management Features to issue licenses and Administer
Enterprise Security Policies. This is highly recommended for controling the
distribution of sensitive information. The Databridge server is for building
Groove applications which access enterprise and legacy system data.

OK, I'm impressed. We used to use Groove briefly prior to Microsoft's
purchase but let the demos expire when we heard Microsoft
acquired it. I've been waiting MONTHS for my free copy of Groove
Server 2007 in the Action Pack. I can't believe we could
have been using Groove this whole time without needing a dedicated
server! And it traverses the firewall with no issues
whatsoever. We're in Boston and are now sharing workspaces with our
Richmond office across two firewalls, no VPN
with zero issues. No wonder Microsoft bought this product :). Ray
Ozzie is a genius. I'd love to see the client integrated into Outlook
(and ultimately
have a workspace server storage space for OWA integration) but this is
killer. I'm kicking myself for not realizing
the server component was optional, especially since I purchased x64
hardware with Server 2003 x64 just waiting for this
(and Exchange 2007 actually so it hasn't gone to complete waste).
*SMACK* stupid self...........
