i am converting my office computer to a home computer for my daughter who is
a college student...presently the computer has a licensed version of Office
which will be transferred to my new computer...i also have a licensed copy of
the student version, for the old computer...my question is, is it necessary
that i uninstall the business version of office, or can i just change the
product key, or whatever?

thanks

Hi Carl,

Product keys for MS Office are specific to each version and suite/package type. If the copy on your computer is an OEM one (came
with the PC) then it would be licensed to the computer and isn't transferable to another computer. If it's a retail version, other
than Student/Teacher's edition then it's licensed for use by a single individual, but on two computers (not simultaneously used).

Generally, odd things can happen if you have multiple suites of the same Office product series (in this case 2003) installed
together.

I hope I am posting correctly, here. Bob, are you saying that I should
uninstall the present MS Office, then install the student version?

Thanks.

Carl

I'm not sure if I am entering my reply correctly, here...

Bob, are you saying that I should uninstall the current MS Office, and then
install the student MS Office?

Hi Carl,

If the version to be used once you transfer the computer isn't the verfsion presently on it, then yes, but if the version on that
machine is an OEM edition (look for the letters OEM in the product ID in Help=>About in Word) you won't be able to move that one to
another machine, so if that's the case you may want to leave things the way they are on that machine.

As with any software change or PC maintenance, backup your files before beginning and restart the PC before installing.
