Do not check spelling or grammar stuck

I have a template with many documents that on certain files gets stuck with
teh "Do not check spelling or grammar" constantly checked. I taught word for
many years and feel a near expert which is why I am so frustrated. I have
done all of the usual items regarding: Ctrl+A then Tools > Language > Set
Language then English and uncheck the box. To no avail, the box keeps coming
back. I have set it as the "default" and updated the Normal.dot template.
This is happening across multiple computers using 2003 and 2007 - but on the
same file. Any ideas? Normal.dot corrupted or something?

Anything would be helpful.

If these documents are based on a template, then it suggests that is may be
that template but it is unlikely to be normal.dot because it shouldn't be in
use. If you open the origin template (as a template) that these documents
are still attached to, does the spell checker work?

Terry,

These files were at one time based on a template, however they are no
longer. We took one file and then just used it to create the shell for the
others and then build out the other files (these are training guides). The
odd thing is that out of 35 or so files, it is only less than 5 that have
this issue.

I am afraid that it is either one of 2 things - free floating text fields
that are stuck with the do not check status, or a corrupted style in the
select files. I have used this formatted document for the better part of 8
years across Word 98, 2000, 2003, and now 2007. Since the issue is across
authors and not specific to a version, I am wondering if it is a problem with
the file or the styles themselves.

Well, it should be easy enough to check the formatting of the styles.

As Suzanne says...

Have you tried to Open and Repair?
Have you tried replicating a "corrupt" version from one of the good
versions?

One of the problems with building new documents from old documents is that
corruptions will build up. It only takes one user with Fast Saves enabled to
start the ball rolling. So Open and Repair or copy all but the final
paragraph mark into a new document may get rid of the corruption. Are you
able to let us have a sample to document to test?

Terry and Suzanne,

Good ideas...

1. Open and repair - didn't seem to do anything... same issue persists.
2. Copied the content from the file (minus the last section) and put it in a
new blank document. Still cannot lose the partial check mark sticking on "do
not spellcheck".

One additional thing, these files have macros that we don't use. When I go
to the Macros section to get rid of any macros, it is blank. Could a macro
cause this?

Unfortunately, I am a consultant and this is a DOD project, so I do not
believe that I can share the file. I will look into it.

The good new is that I think that what is getting skipped is few and far
between, but it is still annoying that we cannot just run a spell check .
This means also that we cannot fully trust that something might be
inadvertantly get skipped.

Any other ideas without actually touching the file?

Sincerely,
Mike

I've just had the same problem and managed to fix it by doing the following:

Click on Office Button | Word Options | Add-Ins | Manage: Disabled Items. If you see any disabled items that relate to spelling, try enabling them.
