"...do you want to make a copy?"

Right-click a .txt or other non-.doc file, choose OPEN WITH|WORD (97) and
the file opens.
As does a prompt that reads...

File in use by c:\path\<username>; do you want to make a copy?

How can that box be banished?

Double-clicking a DOC file is normal: No prompt.

No network. Sole user.
Likely a DDE issue, but no setting variations that I have tested have made
a difference.

If you are the sole user, that probably rules out the possibility of another
Windows XP user name having the file open, especially because this
apparently happens with many files. I have no answer.

Sorry,

Does the "<username>" mean anything to you? I.E. is it your name?

It is indeed...
C:\path\filename.txt> is being used by <my name>. Do you want to make a copy?

This is not life threatening; just a curiousity. It pops up only when
OPEN WITH is used on a non-.doc file.
If instead SEND TO|WINWORD is clicked, then the file opens in WORD as it
should, with no prompt.

It happened to me, too. I was 'Administrator' and opening
any document just after booting the pc gave the same
message. Only after having thoroughly cleaned all
temporary files (*.tmp, ~*.*, etc), deleted the normal.dot
and installed a few SP, the problem went. But still no
clue why.

That is what I've found to be the culprit (the temp files) anytime It's
happened to me. Strange that it happens on ".txt or other non-.doc
file" (assume you mean "any" .txt...file".
I'd search for the temp files to see if I could maybe get a "clue", then
delete any I found.
You could try re-registering Word. I've found that when I've had
"strange" problems with opening files, especially by a direct click on
the file, vs. doing it within the application for ex., that the
re-registering usually works

If you find out the cause I'd be interested in hearing about it.

I found this on another site, and it worked:

Go to Start > Run and run the following command:

winword /regserver

Since this problem is occuring only when you click on the file, yo
will have to re-register your office applications and rebuild the fil
types.

Go to Start > Run and run the following commands:

winword /regserver
Excel /regserver
.. other office applications you have
