.Doc files won't open when I click on them

Hi,

Ever since I upgraded from Win98SE to Win XP, my Word 2000
program will not open any .doc files when I click on
them. Instead Word displays a blank grey screen.
However, If I open Word first and then click on the file,
it opens perfectly. Any idea what's going on?
