doc files wont open

When trying to click on any ".doc" file, a box appears for a second saying
"installing" then Word opens with a blank page displayed for the document.
If I open Word first then open (from file, open) the same ".doc" file it
opens and displays correctly. This is on my Moms PC and she said it started
after a BSOD hang which she had to power off to get out of it. I tried the
"repair" option which said it needed the CD but it can't be found.

Win98
Office XP
H.P. Pavillion PC

Any suggestions?

Hi Dave,

Try getting Word to rewrite its registry entries. On the Start menu, select
Run. In the box, type

winword /r

(Notice the space before the slash.) You won't see anything happen, but Word
runs silently to write to the registry, and then quits. Now try
double-clicking a document to see if it's fixed.

Tried, Still no good. I also tried repairing Internet Explorer, someone
suggested that may help rebuild the links in windows, but still the same
thing.
Anything else? Maybe something with Office XP?

The only "anything else" I know of is something you said you already
tried -- running Office setup in repair mode. If it needs the CD, and you
don't have one, you're stuck.

If Office came bundled with the computer, you'll have to appeal to the
computer vendor to replace the CD. I have no idea whether that will get you
anywhere. :-(

If you bought Office as a retail product, see this page:

That pretty much what I thought, Thanks for your help...
