Doc Loading and Size issue

I have 2 problems and they may be related.
I have 2 excel documents. They are exactly the same in every way except for
the size:

03/17/2009 09:38 AM 4,184,064 Wayne Test.xls
03/17/2009 09:26 AM 28,893,313 Wayne Test.xlsx

The only difference in I saved one as an excel 2007 doc and the other as a
excel 2003. when I open the .xls it loads in a second or two. When I attempt
to open the .xlsx it takes 30 seconds or so to open.

I can figure out why a spreadsheet that started off as an excel 2003 is
suddenly 28MB and moreover why it takes so long to open now that its an
xlsx. Any Ideas?
