Doc opens but w/ random #'s, letters, & symbols

Recently, my computer crashed and I had to reinstall XP
using the restore disks. I then re-installed office2000,
and then put my backed up documents onto the hard drive.
Now, when I open up documents, in some cases they open
fine and in other cases they don't.

I tried to open up one document in particular and a
message said "the feature needed to import the file is
not available" (or something along those lines) and it
prompted me to put in Office 200 premium. I don't have
premium but I put in the office2000 disk I do have, and
now the document opens with random numbers, letters, and
symbols where text used to be.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks...

The doc must not be in Word format. Perhaps you need to install the file converters. You use the Add/remove in Cntl Panel, Office, Add a feature. (Those error messages always ask for Office Pro. You were right to use your disk.)
