docs and templates in sharepoint

When linking a doc in a sharepoint site to a template in the same site,
the template doesn't 'stick'. Instead, the doc shows a template (of the
same name) in the 'workgroup templates' folder.
Any ideas? we want this to be useable/maintainable by various team
members, not just one doc guru.
