DOCS NOT OPENING

I've recently updated my MSWord Program, but now when I click on
document icons,only the Word program opens (I can tell because the
Word tool bar shows at the top of my screen) but the document does not
open. That is, the text does not show up. If I drag the icon from a
folder into a blank word doc, THEN I can see the material--it appears
as if I cut and pasted text. This also happens with email
attachments...I click on the icon and the word program opens, but NOT
the text. What can I do to go back to the way it was (i.e. I click on
an icon/link and the text automatically shows in a document)? HELP!
