I'm having the same problem with Word 2003 that 2 others
in this newsgroup have had. I get the message (Document
cannot be registered. It will not be possible to create
links from other documents to this document.) when I open
a new or existing document in Word 2003 on a Windows XP
Pro computer with XP Service Pack 2.

As suggested in a response to one of the others, I ran
Winword /r and the progress bar that appeared progressed
halfway across the bar and then ended. I still have the
problem. I do not have NAV installed. I use Panda anti-
virus.

Any other suggestions?

That's not promising as winword /r should update in a flash - you certainly
shouldn't see a progress bar. Try running a Detect and Repair from the Help
menu in Word and see if that resolves the problem.

I ran detect and repair and that made worse problems.
After running it, everytime I opened word Detect and
Repair would run before Word opened. And the original
problem still persisted. I tried uninstalling Word alone,
and the uninstall failed. I then uninstalled the entire
Office suite, and that succeeded. I reinstalled Office,
but the problem still occurs. After the reinstall,
Winword /r runs to completion, but it still does not
eliminate the "Document cannot be registered" message.

Uninstall/reinstall rarely fixes and Office problems because all third party
add-in, macros, templates and registry changes are unaffected by the
process. What happens if you start Word from the command line by going to
Start, Run and typing in

winword /a

and pressing enter?

Terry,

Winword /a opens Word normally, just like it does when
clicking on a shortcut. Both ways, its when opening an
existing document within Word or outside it, or opening a
new document within Word, that the error message appears.

Just to clarify, when you have opened in Safe Mode, Word opens normally and
closes again normally to a blank document? Are you able to save the blank
document and close Word?

Terry,

Safe Mode? I don't recall your previous messages saying
anything about Safe Mode. I have been opening Word in
Normal Mode. I have not encountered any function not
working. I can copy and paste from and to documents,
establish links to other documents, and save documents.
When I just open Word from a shortcut, the message does
not appear with the blank document. But it appears every
time I open an existing document or a new document with
Word already opened, and it's annoying. When I click OK
after the message displays, everthing works normally.
