"Document could not be registered"

I am getting the following error message whenever I open the MS Word
application.

"Document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create
links from this document to other documents."

This has been happening ever since I installed the Office 2002 Service
Pack 2 and 3. I have tried system restore, and a couple of registry
modifications suggested on the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and
cannot get this to go away. I have tried all the standard fixes, and
my system is virus free. Since this comes up when I open Word, can I
disable whatever it is that tries to register or checks the
registration status of the document? Any help will be appreciated.
