Hello NG,
I get a strange error message every time I open a Word.doc
I'm using word97 on an XPhome machine, with only me as a user, the guest
account is disabled.
When ever I open a document I get a message saying the document is being
used by James, do you want to make a copy ?

I'm James, and no one else is logged in and only one instance of word is
opened, how can I get rid of this error message?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
James

Anne and Suzanne,
Thanks for the tips, but I still get the error message.
I've made sure I only have one instance of Word running
and I've deleted all the *.tmp and ~$*.do? files.
I'm using Word97 so there's no "detect and repair" on the help menu.
I'm going to get the original install disks out in the morning and try
reinstalling Word to see if that fixes the problem.
I'll post an update for anyone that's interested in the out come.
Again, thanks for the quick response.

I reinstalled Word and every thing is working corrctly now.
When I reinstalled the program the former user's (owner) name was in a
dialog box, I changed that to mine.

More than likely reinstalling Word also recreated the file
associations for Word which was the underlying problem.

If you were double-clicking the documents to open them then Windows is
sending the command to open the file to Word. This isn't the case when
you open a document in Word using File/Open.

More than likely in the file association, used when opening a document
outside the application, the command to start Word had
[FileOpen("%1")] and the same command was used in the DDE string. So
Word was doing exactly as instructed and opening the file twice. :)

Should you encounter this problem again, rather than reinstalling go
to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
