Document is divided in chapters, how to make headings 2 in chapte.

I have my document set into chapters, and I use Chapter 1 as my heading 1.
However when I go to chapter 2 and subsequent chapters, and apply "heading
2" then it starts with number 1.2 instead of 2.1. What can I do?
If I set the restart numbering then is worse, the number I get is 1.1 again.

You have misunderstood the way these heading styles work. The number of the
style is the *level* of the heading, so you need to use Heading 1 for all
your chapter numbers. Heading 2 would be used for subheadings within each
chapter.

thank you. Yes I understand that Heading 2 and so on are for the subheadings
within each chapter, but how do I link the subheadings to the chapter number?
They all seem to be linked to the 1st Chapter. The subheadings in Chapter 2
and 3 and so on start with 1.xx rather than 2.xx or 5.xx etc.
Thank you
