document is locked for edit,can't get balloons to appear, can't make changes

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

I am working on a manuscript and my publisher has sent me the edited version for my final comments. I have tried everything I can think of, keeps saying the document is locked for edit. No balloon appears even though the 'show balloons' option is checked. We don't think its his document since another author was able to do it (although she is using MS word for mac 2007 while I am using 2008) Help?

Hi Barbara;

PC Word offers protection features which apply to the ways in which a
document can be modified. Mac Word doesn't have those protection features,
so any document which has them applied is essentially "read only" when
opened on a Mac. Have the author send you an unprotected copy.
