Document locked for edit

When I open Word and go to type a document, the entire document/ is frozen
and at the bottom of the page it says "This command is not availible because
the document is locked for edit." ?

What does this mean? How do I unlock it so I can type something/anything?

This means that either you have not activated Word (Help | Activate Product)
or you are using a trial version that has expired.
