Document Map instead of Thumbnails

H

Hemant Shah

Every time, I open a document in MS Word 2003, the thumbnails panel opens up.
I do not like the thumbnails panel and if any other negotiation tool has to
appear, I prefer it to be Document Map. Even if the previous time I closed
the document with the Document Map visible, the next time I open it the
Thumbnails panel is shown and not the Document Map.

What is a thumbnails panel? Are you referring to the Task Pane? If so, go to
Tools, Options, View tab and clear the option for Startup Task Pane. If you
close Word with the Document Map open, it should remember this setting. Are
other settings being remembered such as changing the default font or default
page setup? There are certain addins that are so badly written that they
stop Word from saving normal.dot changes: so please check if this is just
the reported settings or all settings that are not being saved.

Ha! You haven't discovered Thumbnails yet? Try View | Thumbnails (Word 2003
only).

Doh! How long have I been using Off2003 and not noticed the Thumbnail View a
la Acrobat! SO there's shortcuts to 5 different Views at the bottom left
edge of Page Pane: why not 6 shortcuts?

Well, Thumbnails are not really a separate view, just something added to the
current view in the same way the Document Map is. I guess you could add a
toolbar button, though, if you like them. I tend to forget about them
myself, even when they would no doubt be helpful.
