'Document may be Corrupt' warning

I

Ian Dewar

I have a 2Mb Word document that, when opened, warns me
that the 'Document may be corrupt...' I have cut'n'pasted
onto a new document which worked for a while; however, now
I get warnings that 'There is not enough disc space to
update the display'. Cutting and pasting onto a Txt file
and then back to a Word doc removes the warning, but I am
loathe to do this as I have spent hours with formatting
and cross referencing. I am using NT 4 Word 97 - any help
most welcome!!

Hi Ian,

Chances are when you cut and pasted the document contents you cut all
of the document contents. More often than not the corruption lies in
the final paragraph mark. Try this again but this time omit the final
paragraph mark. Mare sure you are viewing nonprinting characters (¶ on
the toolbar) to make sure you do not include the paragraph mark when
selecting.

You can also create a new file and use Insert/File to insert the
contents of the corrupt document.

If that doesn't work then here are a few other things to try:

If the document contains graphics then in Word go to
Tools/Options/View and turn in "Picture Placeholders" and "Draft
Font".
If the document contains links then on the General tab make sure
"Update automatic links at Open" is turned off.

Try using a document link to retrieve the corrupt document:
- Create a new document
- Copy some text from another document
- In the new document use Edit/Paste Special and select "Paste Link"
- Go to Edit/Links and change the source of the link to the document
you can not open

If this works then return to Edit/Links and break the link to the
source document.

For additional troubleshooting steps/methods take a look at this
article:

You also try a recovery utility such as those from
http://www.officerecovery.com/, however they aren't free downloads.
