Frustrated Word User

Hi,

I am using Word 2000, and having an inconsistent problems.
Some of the documents sent to me with fields appear
protected when I open them on my computer.
On other machines they are not portected and can be edited.

Which settings should I adjust?

Thanks,
Frustrated Word User.

What do you mean by "appear protected"? Does your Tools menu say Protect
Document or Unprotect Document? Are the fields displaying field codes or
field results?

My Tools menu says "unprotect doc" , and my fields just
show {FIELDS}in grey.
The thing is that on other machines (other users)I
forwarded the doc TO,it does not appear protected and they
can edit the document

Thanks,

You're seeing field codes instead of field results because you have the
"Field codes" option checked in Tools > Options > View. This option is saved
for your PC, not on a per-document basis, so field codes will be visible in
every document you open (if there are any fields).

In order to uncheck that option, you first need to be in an unprotected
document -- the blank Document 1 that you get when you first open Word will
do. Then reopen the form document.

You could equally well unprotect the document (using the Tools menu
command), toggle fields, and then reprotect it. The fact that the Tools menu
says Unprotect Document means that the document *is* protected; if it is a
form, it needs to be protected in order to work. I imagine it is protected
on everyone else's machine, too.
