Document recovery

B

Bonkers

Every second time I launch Word document recovery comes up
with a document that does not exist. The only options are
Open or save as. Delete and Show repairs are greyed out.

I don't care about this document I just want the document
recovery to stop coming up. How do I do this?

If anybody from Microsoft is reading this post, this is a
really bad frustrating feature! I wish I could just turn
it off.

Disappointed to see no response to the original posting.

Exactly the same problem here on alternate launches. Knowledge base
soultions don't work.

Word always refers to same document and time:

Document 1 [Autorecovered]
Last saved with autorecover 22:48 27 May 2004

Save As or Open results with the following 2 popup dialogs:
1) Word Cannot open the document. (Document 1)
2) Error Deleting File or Folder Cannot delete file: Cannot
read from the source file or disk.

Delete document results with just the 2nd dialog above after
confirmation of deletion.

I am using Word 2003 - all up to date patches applied (including the
one specifically for autorecover issues)

I must echo the final comments of "Bonkers"

1. Click "Save as" just to see where the default save location for that
file is.
2. Close all instances of Word.
3. Then, use Windows explorer to navigate to that folder.
4. Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is enabled in Explorer (Tools5. Hopefully, you'll see a hidden temp file that begins with "~$".
6. Delete that file.

Hope that helps,
Mike

Thanks Mike, but not the solution this time. Nice to see a considered
solution.

"Save as" just returns dialog box with OK button "Word cannot open
the document. (document 1)"

I have looked to default file location from options with all hidden
files and folders set to display.
Searched for "~$*" but only found them in recycle bin and recycler
directories. None had dates or times matching the apparent "phantom"
autorecover file.

I am contemplating an uninstall and clean reinstall of Word 2003.
Seems like overkill, but as easier solutions are not available it may
restore sanity.

[email protected] emailed me this:

"I wanted to reply to your post regarding the alternating autorecover
documents in word.

This is a resiliency setting. If you are using a terminal server, go
to the following location:

hklm\software\microsoft\windows nt\current version\terminal
server\install\software\microsoft\office\10.0\word\

There should be a Resiliency key there. Delete this key. The issue
is opening and doing anything in office in install mode. If this is
NOT a terminal server, go to the
HKCU\software\microsoft\office\10.0\word key. If there is a
resiliency key there, delete it. I got this solution from Microsoft,
and it worked for me.

Hope this helps you - "

This is the solution - It fixed my problem in about 60 seconds - much
faster than reinstalling Word.

This solution was hard to discover so it is very valuable knowledge.
