Document Variables

Greetings:

I'm using Word 2007 and I'm a bit confused by things. I've looked through
lots of fora (and several websites) and I still can't seem to make sense of
something that is usually simple.

What I would like are just a couple of document variables throughout a
report I'm using. Examples: Serial Number, Year, Savings, Site Address. I
would like to reuse these variables in other parts of the document, such as
the footer. This will allow anyone that uses the document/template in the
future to not have to manage the complexity of the footers or other
information. I'd rather not hack the existing Quick Parts document property
variables--and besides they're limited.

When I do use the stock Quick Part document property variables they work
great. For example: If I use 'Company', I'm able to enter the company into
the box created and reuse that piece throughout the document; I only have to
fill it out once and the rest of the Quick Parts variable takes that value.
If I change it, I right-click and update field and it is changed throughout
the document. That's what I want to do with custom variables.

How do I do this on a custom basis? I'm not really a VB programmer and I
don't have a thorough enough understanding of VB in order to make something
like that happen. I'd rather just use the functionality there, but the help
files and fora aren't enough for me to figure it out.

Thank you,
