Document won't open

I have a password-protected Word 2000 document that will not open. After
entering the correct password, the following message appears:

"The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
*Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document."

I believe that the password is correct, as entering the wrong password
evokes a different error message.

Is there any way of rescuing this file?

I don't think so. It sounds like the document is corrupted (which can happen
if the computer crashes while a file is being saved, if Fast Saves is
enabled, or if the file is saved directly to a removable disk from Word,
plus a variety of other reasons.

Had it not been password protected, other options might be to try opening
the file using WordPad or something else that "speak" Word formatting. Or,
one could try using Word's Recover Text from Any File (set Files of Type to
this in File Open). However, given that it was passworded, there's likely
encryption. So, that probably is going to make other rescue attempts moot.
But... you can try.

WordPad wouldn't open the file. NotePad did, but it revealed gobbledygook.
Word's recover facility worked, but most of the main text was missing. I
ended up replacing the file with an old backup copy. Pity I didn't back it
up more recently.

Anyway, thanks for replying.
