documents changing format

suddenly any word file I open has been converted to a
recovered text format. lots of repeats, each line with
one or more words (like "Normal, Default Paragraph Font").
I reinstalled from CD -MS Office 97 Professional
Problem still exists.
Can you help?

In the File Open dialog, change the "Files of type" setting from "Recover
text from any file" to "All Word Documents."
