Documents Open Slowly

Word-2003 (Ver. 11.6359.6408 SP1) on Win-XP Pro SP2
(with all updates - and a nice clean machine)

When attempting to open any .DOC while in Windows Explorer, it takes approx

20-seconds for the document to appear.
When opening WORD first and then finding any file to open,
no problem - they open instantly.
When opening from WORD's MRU - no problem - they open instantly.
When opening from The Desktop MRU - no problem - they opens quickly.
All possible ways of opening any document works just fine EXCEPT when
attempting to open ANY document by double-clicking on it while in Windows
Explorer.

My attempts to date to correct this problem have been:
I re-associated ".doc" files with WORD, but no help.
I reregistered word (winword /r), but no help.
I employed the "Detect and Repair" from Word>Help - to no avail.
I have uninstalled office completely and reinstalled - no help.

Any suggestions?

Open Word in Safe Mode (use winword /a from the Run dialog). Close Word
again and then test. Did that make any improvement?

Appreciate the response.
However, tried your suggestion, but to no avail
Beginning to think this is not a WORD problem, but rather a WinXP (Win
Explorer) problem.

If it is an Win/Exp problem, then it would probably be the same for other
Apps. Do you have Excel that you could try out?

Again, attempting to open files from within Windows Explorer:
Excel opens slowly, just like WORD.
PowerPoint Opens quickly?

I'm still concerned that there may be an add-in (macro, template, COM, etc.)
that may be affecting Word and Excel. In Word check to see what is listed
under Macros and check for template add-ins in the various Startup folders.
See the following FAQ to help find any add-ins:

There were no add-in macros or templates.
There was, however, one COM add-in entitled:
"Microsoft Word East European Fonts Tool"
which, since I do not read Russian, Croatian or
any other East European Language, I deleted.
Still no help -- the problem continues.

Well I am going to agree with you that this does look like it's a Windows
problem rather than Office. Perhaps it would be a good time to post this to
the appropriate XP group.
