docx to doc

We have many files in our company that were saved in Word 2007 in the docx
format by a few employees. Most of our employees have Word 2003. I thought
I set the default in 2007 to save as a doc, but something went wrong. What's
the best way to convert these to the old doc format? Is it possible to do
this with a macro? I don't want to manually open every single one
individually and save as a doc.

You'd need to build a list of files to convert, of course, then pass them one-by-one
to a routine such as Greg offers that does the actual SaveAs. If you have trouble
building the list, I'd suggest you might find http://vb.mvps.org/samples/DirDrill
useful.

I've got to ask though, is it a problem to just use the Office 2007
converter in Word 2003 to just open the docs in 2003? It's pretty simple -
doesn't require the user to do anything really. There are a few details, but
I want to make sure you're aware of the existence of the 2007 Compatibility
Pack.

Well, it requires the user to download and install it. Not something everyone wants
to mess with. Far better to encourage a bit of social engineering with a "Just Say
No!" to MSFT message, eh? There's no reason people should be saving documents for
distribution in non-standard formats. If MSFT *cared* about users, it would have
made the more common format the default, thereby facilitating document exchange.
Instead, MSFT decided to *abuse* users by enlisting them to unwittingly push the
marketeering agenda(s) du jour. Not cool.
