does 'Office97 Version Checker' have an update?

I've noticed that after either the latest Word security update install (or
may have been the other one) ...but after applying the update now the
Office97 Version Checker doesn't say I have SR2b anymore and says it's SR1
...but I know it's not so maybe the new updates just breaks or outgrows the
things that the version checker used to check with the new patches...?

Does anyone know if there's a new Office97 Version Checker available, or a
workaround.

thanks,
Rick

Doug,

I had just installed it starting with the Office97 Pro CD that is SR1 and
selected Custom and installed the things I wanted, and when done installing
and then using the Office Version Checker sr2chk.exe it said it's SR1 and I
can install SR2, and so I then installed SR2b from this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...42-602E-42B0-89D2-6BE39F1167C1&displaylang=EN
...and using the version checker again it now said SR2 level and that was
fine, and so reading carefully trying to decipher which patches were still
needed after SR2b off the Updates links from this link
http://office.microsoft.com/officeu...ID=CD010224961033&CTT=4&Origin=ES790020041033
..this is what I came up with these:
~Office 97 ODBC Driver Vulnerability Security Update = JetCopkg.exe
~Word 97 Patch Template Security = Wd97SP.exe
~Forms 2.0 Control Security Patch = fm2paste.exe
~Office 97 Unique Identifier Patch = off97uip.exe
~Office 97 Unique Identifier Removal Tool = pf_setup.exe
~Word 97 Patch Malformed Conversion Data Vulnerability = WW5Pkg.exe
~Word 97 Patch Leap Year Fix = Wd97lyp.exe
~Word 97 Update Mail Merge Security = wdac97.exe
~Word 97 Security Update Macro Vulnerability = Wd97mcrs.exe
~Word 97 Security Patch = Office97-KB830354-ENU.exe
~PowerPoint 97 Update HTML Script Vulnerability = ppt97sec.exe
~Outlook 97 Import-Export Date Fix = o97dtfix.exe
~Excel 97 Security Patch = Office97-KB830356-ENU.exe

Now after having installed all these new updates, and now when I look in
the AboutBox of the Office97 apps I've installed they say:

Word 97 SR-2
Powerpoint 97 SR-2
Outlook 97 (8.004.5619)
Excel 97 SR-2 (n)
Binder 97
(fwiw I never installed Access - I unchecked it during Custom install)

Anyway, my question is when I now run the Office Version Checker after
having applied the above new patches - it now says it's at SR-1 level
and to install SR2 ? ..and so that's why I'm asking if there is a new
Version Checker available that reads it all right - or - did I do something
wrong?

Thank you,

Rick

I see now what's causing this and it's simply that the Office97 Version
Checker was never updated beyond the things it checks for from only at the
time when SR2b was made ..but most of the patches now changes the exe's,
dll's, etc, newer and the ver checker balks and goes back to saying SR-1

So any of the Excel Patch's there after SR2b as well as the Word patches,
etc, all of them will cause the Version Checker to go SR1

Yes I see now the 97sr2_xx.log file lists the last Non-SR2 file it stops on
and that triggers the prompt.

Also the Excel patches listed on the update site are redundant since the
latest patch replaces the exact same files, but newer versions, that the
two before it after SR2b did so those maybe should be removed since if
anyone goes to apply them after they've applied the latest one it will
prompt from their own install that it's not an SR2 version so it can't be
patched - which is further confusing for those who don't realize.

Extracting the Version Checker exe file: sr2chk.exe ...I see the
filelist.txt in there it uses for proof... well I would modify it if I
knew what to change but there is more to it than meets my eye anyway... I
can't tell if it's looking for version numbers or file sizes - or what???

...I don't expect the programmer to redo it since Office97 is so old - it
would be nice though because it would save lots of time for many who come
across this and wonder - and then spend the time of others asking about it.

Office 97 may be old but it's still my favorite in simplicity..

My Office install is just fine and is SR2b and beyond... so be it !
