Is it possible to register a domain name and have it point to a subdomain?

Yes. The subdomain would be set up on the host server, with the proper dns
entries.

This is something you need to ask your web host, as most likely they would need to set this up,
unless you have this option in your control panel. If use the FP extensions, you may need to create
subweb/subsite and have the subdomains pointed the subwebs.
